What is Satin?

The word satin describes a weave not the textile, and most fabric characterised as satin has a soft, shiny finish. Weaves are often named from the way their threads are laid over each other. In this instance, satin threads are woven in such a way that one side of the fabric has a bold sheen, while the other side is dull.

Satin originated in medieval China in the port city of Quanzhou, which was called Zaitun in medieval Arabic, hence the name satin today.

    Back then it was exclusively woven with Silk but today there are several types of Satin including Polysatin which is what I use to print my fabrics. Any long continuous fibre can be woven successfully into a satin weave.

    Satin is characterised by its shiny, beautiful drape. It’s durable and anti-wrinkle nature makes it popular for upholstery, clothing and accessories, bed linen and footwear. Due to it’s shine it can be a little slippery to work with and it can catch and snag easily when sewing. But there are tricks to overcome these such as cutting your pattern pieces perpendicular to the selvage as shown here.

    Caring for satin or silk has its tricks including flour to remove oily stains before you wash. Like anything, the more care we take with something, the longer it will last.
