    For purchased pieces, research brands known for their craftsmanship and sustainable practices. Ask friends. I have a dress I wear that I frequently get asked by strangers where I got it. I turn around and get them to pull back the collar so they can see the tag.

    A capsule wardrobe can be created for multiple purposes. A purpose includes work, holiday, active, formal or travel. In addition to the theme of the wardrobe, a consideration of the weather is important. For example a Summer holiday wardrobe is different to a Winter wardrobe. Finally, your personal style needs to be taken into account.

    These three are a good place to start with any capsule wardrobe for most occasions:

    1. Tops: T-Shirts, Shirts (e.g., Oxford and Camp Collar), and Sweater/Jumper
    2. Bottoms: Chinos, Jeans, and Shorts
    3. Outerwear: Jackets, Coats, and Blazers

    Shoes are pretty important but I cover these in Accessories.

    Handmade vs Purchased

    When blending handmade and purchased items into your wardrobe, you want to think about what you want to sew and what you don’t want to sew.

    For me I don’t want to be sewing t-shirts. I would much prefer to buy a good quality bright white t-shirt such as Merz B Schwanen or Australian family business, Gazman and invest my time into a tailored shirt.

    For me there are certain wardrobe essentials best acquired from reputable manufacturers to ensure longevity and craftsmanship.

     

    I am not about to embark on making a pair of shoes, sunglasses, a bag or a belt
    but all of these are possible if you want to take them on. In saying this, the Merchant and Mills bag patterns and fabrics are pretty amazing so there is a good chance I will invest my creativity in one of these one day. I also still wear a leather belt my aunt (my God Mother) made me when I was a teenager nearly 40 years ago. I treasure it every time I put it on. There is always something special about a hand made gift.

      I have developed a unique way to visualise your colour type, so when you are standing in the coffee line you can use it to work out why the shirt the person in front of you is wearing looks so good on them. More importantly you can do it for your family. It gives you a permanent reference every time you sew for them.

    Applying this rule ensures that your outfits remain balanced while still incorporating
