FAQs

When does it start?

1 January 2025

Once you have joined the waitlist you will receive emails so you are prepared when the challenge starts.

We want this to be a fun and rewarding challenge and we aim to help you plan out your capsule wardrobe so you know what you will be sewing, what look you want and what colours suit you.

The planning stage all happens in January so you will want to be there from the start!

What sewing skill level is required?

Beginners + an understanding of sewing basics is required to complete the garments.

Some are more complex, but with the step by step video tutorials and written instructions all skill levels will be able to complete each of the garments planned.

How many garments are we making?

A capsule wardrobe is typically described as follows (or some variant of it):

  • 5 shirts
  • 4 pants
  • 3 shoes
  • 2 jackets
  • 1 accessory (e.g hat)

This will guide us to which garments we will be making throughout the year.

You decide when to make which garment.

We will be making 10 garments altogether. The final makeup of the collection will be determined by the time the challenge starts.

One month is dedicated to planning and one month is to have a break.

Shirts - some patterns will be sewn twice - but you get to add your creative flair to them - change them according to the trends on your mood board or simply change the fabric.

One of your shirts in your final collection could be a t-shirt (which you may or may not want to sew)

Pants - will include shorts and trousers.

Jackets - this will include 1 jacket and 1 robe.

Shoes - we won't be making shoes! but include the shoes in your mood board to ensure cohesiveness.

What if I can’t decide what to make?

There is a private Facebook page available to any customer of Jane Harbison Design. You are free to post pictures and ask for help in that group.

Will you help with colours that suit me?

You will get access to the Fabric Formula.

This is a visual step by step guide and quiz to determining which colours suit you best. This will be a valuable input for planning your mood board at the beginning of the challenge.

Do I have to make a Men's capsule wardrobe?

Yes, this is a challenge for creating a men's capsule wardrobe. All the material and information we provide will be designed with boys and men in mind.

But once you have the principles down, there is no reason you can't apply this to creating a women's capsule wardrobe.

Can I join if the challenge has already started?

Yes. You can join at anytime during the year.

Once you have purchased your ticket you get access to the Sewing Hub with all you need to get your Men's Capsule Wardrobe done by 31st December 2025.

Will there be any new sewing patterns during the challenge?

Yes. Each year we aim to put out 1-3 new sewing patterns.

They are in response to survey feedback from our customers and our design style.

We define our style as classy casual - which means you can dress it up or down.

All our sewing patterns can be mixed and matched. So any new patterns released during the year can be added to the Capsule Wardrobe Challenge.

What is the difference between and Capsule and a Minimalist wardrobe?

A Capsule wardrobe contains a prescribed number of pieces that can be mixed and matched for any occasion.

A Minimalist wardrobe can be a capsule wardrobe, but it usually is made with a limited colour palette (e.g. white, blue, beige and brown).

With a Capsule wardrobe you can go nuts with colour (as long as it suits you) in a cohesive way across the collection.

Will I need any additional equipment to complete the challenge?

No - no special equipment is required to complete the garments. All patterns can be sewn with a household sewing machine (overlocker is optional), thread and scissors.

Mood board - to complete your physical mood board this will require an A3 piece of paper, colour printer, sticky tape/glue and scissors.

Colour Palette - we will recommend using water colour paints to create a colour palette because this helps you understand shades (+black) and tints (+white) but not essential.

Where will all the resources and patterns be found?

Everything to do with the challenge will be found in your private sewing hub.

When you purchase your Challenge ticket this will trigger access to the resources throughout the year including guest interviews and handouts etc.

Any new pattern purchases will also appear in your sewing hub.

If you are an existing customer of Jane Harbison Design you will be able to login as usual.

I don't know how to create a fashion mood board.

This is one of the first steps we take you though so when you start sewing you have clarity and peace of mind.

We will create a physical mood board that you can touch.

The purpose of the mood board is to provide a visual for your men's capsule wardrobe. We will cover who it is for and your theme - colours, words and trends.

What happens if I don't complete the challenge?

Of course - we want you to complete your first capsule wardrobe of favourites.

It will be incredibly rewarding.

But no-one is going to come knocking on your door on New Years Eve asking to see your collection.

Only you can complete it. We will be there to support you to get it done and we have a rest month in the middle for "catching up".

But as someone who loves to sew you have all the characteristics of someone who sees something through.

Does this replace the Sew Alongs?

Yes. It replaces the Sew Alongs we have held in the past. No sew alongs for Valentine's or Father's Day will be held in 2025.

Instead you will be creating beautiful garments all year round that he will want to wear - a total of 10.

What will it cost?

UPFRONT FEE
There is an upfront fee of A$57 to join the challenge which will give you access to Challenge Hub. This includes special guest interviews, PDF guides and your "Fabric Formula".

ONGOING IN 2025
Sewing patterns will need to be purchased which you have lifetime access, including any future updates and the video tutorials.
