Sewing Pattern Sizes for Boys and Men

Whether you're sewing for a young boy, a teenager or a grown man, Jane Harbison Design offers PDF sewing patterns across four size groups, including plus sizes for men up to 7XL. We start at size 5 which means we don't do babies or toddlers.

Size Group Available Sizes
Boys 5, 6, 7, 8, 10
Youth / Teens 10, 12, 14, 16, 18
Men S, M, L, XL, 2XL
Men Plus 3XL, 4XL, 5XL, 6XL, 7XL

Each pattern purchase includes all sizes within your selected size group, so you can sew different sizes as they grow and change.

Choosing the Right Size

  • Body measurement charts linked on every product page on this website help you select the correct starting size.
  • Finished garment measurements help you understand the intended fit and wearing ease when the garment is finished.
  • Layered PDF files let you display and print only the sizes you need, making it easier to blend between sizes. Each size has a different line style and colour, so you can still distinguish between sizes when printing in black and white — a more economical printing option.

Measurements are provided in both centimetres and inches.

Printing Your Pattern: A4/Letter, A3, A0 and Projector Files

Every Jane Harbison Design PDF sewing pattern comes in multiple formats, giving you the flexibility to print at home, use a professional printing service or project the pattern directly onto your fabric.

File Format Paper Size (cm) How to Use It
A4 / US Letter A4: 21 × 29.7
Letter: 21.6 × 27.9
Print at home on standard paper, then trim and assemble the pages.
A3 29.7 × 42 Print on larger sheets to reduce the number of pages you need to assemble.
A0 84.1 × 118.9 Use a large-format printing service for full-size pattern sheets.
Projector N/A Project pattern pieces directly onto fabric without printing.

Print Only What You Need

  • Layered PDF files allow you to select the sizes you want to print.
  • Test squares help you check that your pattern is printing at the correct scale.
  • Metric and imperial measurements make it easier to work with your preferred measurement system.
  • Assembly Guides - account for the all the different printer margin settings so they will print in from the edge of your paper. This ensures everyone can print their sewing pattern to scale regardless of their printer type and settings.

Projector-Friendly Features

  • 4 px wide pattern lines for clearer projection onto fabric.
  • Centimetre and inch grids on separate layers, so you can display your preferred measurement system.
  • Single-column pattern piece layout to simplify fabric cutting and navigation.

Printing tip: Print at 100% or Actual Size, with Fit to Page turned off. Measure the test square before printing the full pattern.

Choose whichever format suits your equipment and sewing space — all formats are included in your purchase. For more help, see How to Print Your PDF Sewing Pattern, including instructions for A0 printing at Officeworks (Australia).

Step-by-Step Sewing Instructions and Video Tutorials

Every Jane Harbison Design sewing pattern includes illustrated, step-by-step instructions and a sewing video tutorial to guide you through making your garment or accessory.

Whether you're an experienced sewer or trying a new technique, choose the learning method that suits you best.

What's Included?

  • Step-by-step written instructions – clear, illustrated guidance from preparation through to finishing.
  • Sewing video tutorial – watch the garment or accessory being constructed, with techniques demonstrated along the way.
  • Fabric and haberdashery requirements – know what materials and supplies you'll need before starting.
  • Cutting layouts – guidance for positioning pattern pieces on fabric. One size used across all size ranges as a suggestion, but different fabric widths and directional fabric patterns will impact your layout.
  • Sewing terminology – relevant terms and techniques explained within the instructions for that garment.
  • Sewing schedule – an optional way to organise your project into manageable daily sessions so you get it made. (selected patterns)

You can follow the written instructions, watch the video or use both together. All instructions and tutorials are accessible through your customer hub, so you can return to them whenever you need a refresher.

What Support Is Available if You Need Help?

Sometimes a little extra guidance makes all the difference. If you have a question about your Jane Harbison Design sewing pattern, help is available.

  • Illustrated sewing instructions – follow the step-by-step guidance included with your pattern.
  • Video tutorials – watch sewing techniques and construction steps demonstrated.

Choosing Your Fabric and Getting the Fit Right

The right fabric and a good fit can make all the difference to a finished garment. Every Jane Harbison Design sewing pattern includes the information you need to plan your project.

Choosing Your Fabric

  • Recommended fabric types – guidance on suitable fabrics for the garment's design and intended fit.
  • Fabric requirements – how much fabric you'll need for your chosen size and fabric width is included in the pattern and fabric requirements for all sewing patterns are listed here on the website.
  • Haberdashery requirements – additional supplies such as buttons, elastic or interfacing.

Not sure which fabric to choose? Read How to Choose Fabric for Men's Sewing Projects.

Getting the Fit Right

  • Body measurement charts – help you choose your starting size using actual body measurements.
  • Finished garment measurements – show the dimensions of the completed garment so you can assess fit and wearing ease.
  • Metric and imperial measurements – provided in centimetres and inches.
  • Layered pattern sizes – make it easier to blend between sizes if adjustments are needed.
  • Shoulder width – I recommend starting with the shoulder width when choosing a shirt pattern size. It's one of the more difficult areas to adjust, so start with the best shoulder fit and adjust other lengths and widths as needed.

Remember, the size label is only a starting point. Compare body and finished garment measurements to work out your preferred ease before you cut. Jane Harbison Design's are designed with a relaxed fit, so a generous amount of ease is included in the patterns. See the sizing guide for more help.

Making Adjustments Before You Cut

Once you have chosen your size, fabric and preferred amount of ease, take a little time to check the pattern before cutting. Small adjustments at this stage can make a significant difference to the finished garment.

Compare and Check

  • Compare Finished Garment Measurements – compare the chest, waist, hip, sleeve and garment lengths with the finished garment measurements.
  • Check the intended ease – consider how the garment will be worn and whether you prefer a closer or more relaxed fit.
  • Review the length – compare the pattern's finished length with a garment you already own and like wearing.
  • Consider fabric behaviour – account for drape, stretch, thickness and any expected shrinkage.

Common Pattern Adjustments

  • Garment length – add or remove length at the designated adjustment lines.
  • Sleeve length – shorten or lengthen the sleeves while maintaining the original shape.
  • Chest, waist or hip width – blend between sizes to make adjustment where needed.
  • Shoulder width – start with the right size across the shoulders
  • Sleeve fit – make minor changes to width or ease for comfort and movement.

Make a Toile

If you're unsure, make a toile in a similar-weight fabric before cutting your final fabric. I have had many customers say they should have made a toile first, particularly when making it for the first time. When you do you have a template to use over and over.

How Difficult Are Jane Harbison Design Sewing Patterns?

Every Jane Harbison Design sewing pattern has a suggested skill level on its product page, helping you understand the experience recommended for the project.

But I believe you shouldn't let a difficulty rating stop you from making something you love. With clear, step-by-step instructions and video tutorials, you can attempt a garment even if some techniques are new to you. In fact, I think we learn the most when we challenge ourselves.

  • Read the instructions from beginning to end before you start – just like reading a cooking recipe, this helps you understand the whole process, prepare your materials and allocate time.
  • Watch the entire sewing video before you begin – see how the garment comes together, how each step leads to the next and why the order of construction matters.
  • Take your time – work through one step at a time, particularly when learning a new technique.
  • Ask for help – if you get stuck, you're always welcome to contact me.

You might surprise yourself with what you can make!

Extra Resources to Help You Make Something He'll Love

Sometimes choosing the sewing pattern is the easy part. Deciding on the fabric, colours and finishing details can take a little more thought!

Explore Our Sewing and Design Resources

  • Style Guides – explore different ways to customise and style garments so they look good on the person you're sewing for, including fabric choices, colour combinations and design details.
  • Fabric and Colour Workshops – learn how to select the right fabrics and create cohesive colour palettes for him using the 5 Colour Method and Fabric Formula.
  • Sewing Project Charts and Checklists – organise your materials and record details so you have them handy next time you sew.
  • Pucker Up Sewing Blog – find practical tutorials, fabric advice, capsule wardrobe sewing tips and modern inspiration on the blog.
  • Sewing Pattern Sizing Resources – get additional guidance on choosing sizes and understanding garment measurements.

Some resources are free, while others, such as Style Guides and Workbooks, are available as separate purchases.

The skills you learn will stay with you for a lifetime. They can change how you approach sewing, from choosing fabrics and combining colours to creating garments that look and feel right on the person wearing them.

Whether you're sewing a shirt, pair of shorts, robe or accessory, these resources can help you make confident design decisions.

Can You Use Your Sewing Pattern More Than Once?

Absolutely! When you purchase a Jane Harbison Design PDF sewing pattern, you can use it again and again for your personal sewing projects. Keep your assembled paper pieces, including your marks and fit adjustments, for the next time you sew.

The Benefits of Reusable PDF Sewing Patterns

  • Replace damaged or lost pattern pieces – reprint individual pieces without buying another pattern.
  • Print only the sizes you need – use layered PDF files to select preferred sizes without overlapping lines.
  • Access multiple printing formats – choose between A4/US Letter, A3, A0 and Projector files whenever you need them. Try A0 when you don't feel like sticking lots of A4 pages together.
  • Keep a digital backup – your original files remain available in the customer hub, even if your printed pattern is lost or damaged.
  • Access updated versions – download the latest pattern files and instructions whenever improvements are made.

Create More Looks from One Pattern

Changing the fabric, colour or small design details can give the same sewing pattern a completely different look. For example, a Camp Collar Shirt could become a casual linen summer shirt, a bold printed holiday shirt or a smart cotton shirt for a beach wedding.

One sewing pattern can become many different garments. Your standard purchase is for personal use; if you'd like to sell finished garments, see the commercial licence options below.

Can You Sell Garments Made Using Jane Harbison Design Sewing Patterns?

Frequently Asked Questions About Buying a PDF Sewing Pattern

Are Jane Harbison Design sewing patterns digital or printed?

All Jane Harbison Design sewing patterns are digital PDF patterns, not physical paper patterns. Download the printing format you prefer from your customer hub.

Can I print a PDF sewing pattern at home?

Yes! All patterns include A4/US Letter files for home printing, A3 and A0 for larger-format printing, and projector files if you prefer to cut from a projected pattern. There are a couple of exceptions for A4/Letter because the pattern is so large (e.g. Robe Men Plus) that it isn't efficient to have it is A4/Letter. The formats are listed in each product page.

Do Jane Harbison Design sewing patterns include video tutorials?

Yes. Every sewing pattern includes illustrated instructions and a video sewing tutorial. Both are accessible through your customer hub.

Do I need special software to open my sewing pattern?

You'll need a PDF reader. Free Adobe Acrobat Reader is a useful choice because it lets you select individual size layers before printing.

Can I download my sewing pattern again after purchasing?

Yes. Return to your customer hub to download files, view instructions and watch tutorials whenever you need them.

What if I lose the email containing my pattern access details?

At the time of purchase you are emailed a PDF with login instructions and the link to your hub. Save this PDF on your computer for easy access. If you lose your purchase email or have trouble accessing your patterns, email via Contact Form for help.
