Why use the 5 Whys Method and What Is It
Have you ever sat in front of your fabric stash, full of good intentions, but with no idea what to make? You know you can't buy any more. You really need to use up what you already have but ideas allude you.
Or maybe you’ve been stuck wondering what to sew for someone you love — afraid of getting it wrong or wasting something beautiful. Cutting into that special piece of fabric!
The truth is, when we say things like “I don’t know what to sew” or “I don’t know what to make him,” we’re usually circling around the real problem — not naming it directly. And if you can’t name the problem, it’s very hard to solve it.
That’s where the 5 Whys method comes in.
Originally used in design thinking and problem-solving frameworks, the 5 Whys is a simple but powerful tool. You take a surface-level problem, ask “Why?” five times, and gradually uncover what’s actually holding you back. And once you can name the real issue, the solution becomes obvious and often much simpler than you thought.
I use it when creating fabric design collections that I pitch to men's clothing brands. I find it incredibly useful so I am not wasting my time or theirs.
In this blog, I walk you through how this method works for three different sewing styles:
- Spontaneous Creator (who follow instinct and buy fabric based on feeling)
- Creative Maker (who want each project to feel expressive and original)
- Meticulous Planner (who thrive on structure and intention)
You’ll see how each type gets stuck for different reasons and how to unlock progress by simply asking the right question.
Key Takeaways
Most sewing problems are just surface-level symptoms. The real issue is hiding underneath.
- The 5 Whys method helps you uncover what’s really going on, so you can solve the right problem the first time.
- Different sewing styles get stuck for different reasons — knowing your style helps you move forward with confidence and ease.
- Let’s take a closer look at how this works, starting with one of the most common questions I hear: “I don’t know what to sew.”
Lets start with you and then we will address some common questions when making for others.
🧵 PROBLEM 1: "I don't know what to sew?"
This question is being explored from three perspectives - our three different sewer types
- Spontaneous Creator
- Creative Maker
- Meticulous Planner
✨ SPONTANEOUS CREATOR
1. Why don’t you know what to sew?
→ Because I haven’t had a spark of inspiration yet.
2. Why hasn’t anything inspired you yet?
→ Because I haven’t seen a fabric or pattern that excites me.
3. Why?
→ Because I haven’t looked with a purpose — just waited for something to grab me.
4. Why haven’t you looked with purpose?
→ Because I usually rely on impulse rather than intention to start a project.
5. Why?
→ Because I want the next project to feel meaningful — not just fun.
Summary
You’re craving spontaneity with more purpose. Once you aim your instinct at something meaningful, the spark returns. It is an important rule of creativity - creativity excels when given boundaries.
Tool/Tip
Use this Sewing Spark List:
• 3 things you like to wear
• 2 upcoming events
• 1 feeling you want to express (e.g. fun, sexy, comfortable)
🎨 CREATIVE MAKER
1. Why don’t you know what to sew?
→ Because I want it to be expressive and original, but I’m stuck.
2. Why are you stuck?
→ Because I have too many ideas and none feel quite right.
3. Why?
→ Because they’re not grounded in something meaningful to me.
4. Why?
→ Because I haven’t clarified what I want this project to say or do.
5. Why?
→ Because I want to feel proud of the end result, not just finish it.
Summary
You’re not lacking ideas, you are lacking direction. Once you define the story or emotion, the right idea appears.
Tool/Tip
Use your Fabric Formula to define your Colour Type and create within thoughtful constraints.
📋 METICULOUS PLANNER
1. Why don’t you know what to sew?
→ Because I haven’t decided on a clear, useful project.
2. Why are you stuck?
→ Because nothing seems to match my current plan or fill a clear need.
3. Why?
→ Because I prefer sewing things that fit into a bigger plan.
4. Why?
→ Because I don’t have a framework to evaluate spontaneous ideas.
5. Why?
→ Because I don’t want to waste time, money or effort.
Summary
You’re not indecisive — you just need a system to assess ideas against your goals and move forward with confidence.
