Introduction
Candy stripe fabric is a timeless classic that has found its way into many stylish men’s wardrobes.
In this post, I’ll explore the versatility of Candy stripe fabric, its history, and why it remains a popular choice for men’s clothing. I’ll also highlight some great garment options that look fantastic in candy stripes and offer tips on how to style them for different occasions.
What is a Candy Stripe and Its History?
I have always been aware of different stripes, but only in the last couple of years have I learnt they all have different names, thanks to Bärbel Dressler, History Repeating.
Candy stripe fabric is characterised by its even, alternating bands of two contrasting colours. Traditionally in colours of white and a pastel pink, blue, or yellow, the stripes are vertical and can vary in width.
This pattern has been around for centuries, but only in the 20th century was it synonymous with fresh, clean aesthetics. In the Middle Ages it was associated with social outcasts, worn by prisoners, criminals and hangman. They were ordered to wear it so they could be easily identified.
Popularised in the Victorian era, Candy stripes have seen various revivals in fashion, from 1920s summer suits to 1960s mod styles (think James Bond), and they continue to be a popular fabric choice today. You only have to do a quick search on Pinterest to see what I mean.
Why Stripes are One of the Most Popular Pattern Designs for Men
It is because it is so versatile. It offers a range of looks from casual to formal and can be made up into so many different garments from pocket squares to suits. Stripes, especially Candy stripes, are a staple in men's fashion. In addition, stripes can create optical illusions that flatter different body types. Vertical isn’t always the most flattering. Horizontal Hickory or Navy stripes can make the right body shape look slimmer.
But we are talking about Candy Stripe, which can add a touch of sophistication or playfulness to an outfit. Whether it’s a bold, wide stripe for a statement piece or a subtle pinstripe for a more understated look, stripes offer endless possibilities. And chances are he has one in his wardrobe already.
Understanding Candy Stripe Scales
Candy stripes come in various scales, each bringing a different vibe to the garment. Each designer will have their own scale measurement and it really depends on the purpose. This is the scale I have used for my Candy Stripe designs:- Extra Large Scale: Approx. 8cm wide (on request)
- Large Scale: Around 3cm wide
- Medium Scale: Between 1.8 - 2cm wide
- Small Scale: 1.2cm
- Ditsy Scale: .3cm
- Pin Scale: .1cm (on request)
How to Wear Candy Stripes: Vertical or Horizontal?
A Candy Stripe is traditionally worn vertically, but that is not to say you can’t turn it on its side, especially to create variance and balance in a garment.
The direction of stripes can greatly impact the overall appearance of a garment. Vertical stripes tend to elongate the body, making them a great choice for shorter or stockier men who want to create the illusion of height. Horizontal stripes can add width, which can be flattering for taller, leaner men or those looking to balance out their proportions.
Six Men's Garments That Look Great in Candy Stripes
The checklist provides the full list of garments, corresponding fabric types and scales.
Here is a summary using the garments you can make from our sewing patterns:
1. Boxer Shorts
Ditsy to Large Scale
Candy stripe boxer shorts are found in many men’s wardrobes. A lightweight fabric options such as 100% cotton or cotton silk ensure comfort, while the playful stripes add a fun twist. Yes, Candy stripes are fun – they are associated with selling sweets after all! Although traditionally the boxer short will be in the smaller scales, I think they look good at all scales and all body shapes. Such as this Seersucker version.
2. Box Sleeve Robe or Dressing Gown
Ditsy to Medium (Boy)
Small to Large Scale (Men)
I recommend small to large scale because this is a garment with a large surface area, particularly for the Men Plus sizes. Therefore, a ditsy stripe might look a bit busy. In saying that, the ditsy would look fresh and fun on the small Boy size range.
3. Reversible Bucket Hat
Ditsy to Large Scale
A bucket hat that holds its shape (which I prefer on men) is best in heavy weight fabric like a Cotton Canvas or Dogwood Denim wood look good candy stripe fabric. Particularly if used as an accent pattern. Pair it with a solid or floral. It adds a touch of flair and freshness to your summer outfit.
Traditionally, small-scale stripes work best for this accessory, creating a subtle, coordinated look without overwhelming the wearer. But…a modern statement can be made with the large scale.
4. Camp Collar Buttoned Down Shirt
Ditsy to Large Scale
I love this shirt on men – I am bias. It has a relaxed vibe. A Camp Collar Shirt (or Hawaiian shirt) in candy stripes offers a relaxed yet polished look. Consequently this makes it very versatile. And when we have versatile garments in our wardrobe, we need less of them. And when we need less of them, we are reducing garment waste and landfill.I suggest this shirt looks good in all stripe scales, but I break this down further in the Checklist based upon the type of fabric you use.
5. Lounge Pants
Large to Medium
Lounge pants in candy stripe fabric are a great choice for a casual, laid-back style. Whether made from Dogwood denim for a more rugged feel or from lightweight cotton twill for comfort, these pants can easily transition from home wear to a casual day out. Vertical stripes help elongate the legs, making them flattering for most body types.
6. Mid-Thigh Shorts
Large to Ditsy
Perfect for summer, mid-thigh shorts in candy stripe fabric are versatile and stylish. Choose a fabric like satin or cotton silk for a dressier look, or go with Essex linen for a more relaxed vibe. Vertical stripes can help lengthen the appearance of the legs, while medium to large stripes can create a bold, eye-catching effect.
I won’t go into homewares here, but needless to say Candy stripe at all scales is a fresh accent pattern type in any home. Heck, go crazy and Candy up your whole bedroom.
There is a reason this pattern style has remained a staple.
Candy stripe fabric offers endless possibilities for creating stylish, versatile men’s clothing regardless of his size and shape. For a simple beginner project make the boxer short or for a more intermediate sewing pattern grab the sophisticated yet comfortable Camp Collar Shirt.
There’s a stripe scale and fabric type to suit every occasion.
